Bahia Honda State Park has one thing very unusual for the Florida Keys. It's got a beach. Plus a truely beautiful one as well. Add to it nice camping sites and you have got the formula for a Florida Keys camping paradise. Let's see why.
Although the Florida Keys are islands in the sun, natural beaches are very exceptional indeed. Why? Largely since the waters that surround the Keys are so very tranquil, the beach does not get an opportunity to build up. Bahia Honda has, hands down, the best beach in the Keys, and possibly the best in Florida.
Swimming is quite a popular activity at Bahia Honda. The calm turquoise waters are warm, being in the upper 70s to the low 80s most of the year. And the waters are very clear. Though the beach looks out to the Atlantic Ocean, unless there is a storm out in the ocean, the waters are tranquil.
Together with swimming, snorkeling is quite a big draw to Bahia Honda State Park. The peaceful, clear turquoise waters which invite swimming are excellent for exploring the underwater world. And if you'd like a delight, take a snorkeling tour from the park out to Looe Key to visit the amazing coral reef there.
Kayaking, canoeing and boating are additionally on the list of fun things at the park. There's a little marina plus a boat ramp. If you've somehow mislaid your boat, you can rent a kayak from the park concession. The serene waters are fantastic for exploring the waterways around the island, especially on the Gulf side.
Don't forget Florida Keys camping. From tents to RVs to renting one of their beach cabins, all types of camping are available. Here's a warning: call ahead to place a reservation for a camping spot or particularly one of the cottages. As you may imagine, a beach bungalow in paradise has quite a waiting list.
Bahia Honda State Park is found in the lower Florida Keys, just south and west of Seven Mile Bridge. Just one visit and you will understand why they call the Florida Keys the American Caribbean. Or just call it Paradise.
